blue ribbon Read my essay here
Prize Awarded: UC Santa Cruz Regents Scholarship
Entry: Essay - about 500 words
Date: 4/28/2011

Despite my 4.0 GPA, I was kind of surprized to be selected as a competitor for this scholarship - much less actually win it. Even more surprizing, the scholarship was awarded to me only four days after I submitted my essay (three days after the deadline). The same essay was competing for both the Regents and Merit scholarships at UCSC. I had the option of either writing about idea, song, etc. that influenced my thoughts and why or constructing a narrative using four words selected from a list. I chose the second option - and a darn good thing too! In all honesty, this scholarship was what tipped the scales between the decision to either attend UCSC or UCSD (which was my original choice, based largely upon the location).

2008

Lemon Chocolate Cake
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Chocolate Lemon Cake
Date:8/14/2008

The base of this was a chocolate torte with a chocolate crumb crust. The filling was lemon curd. On top of the curd, I put a disc and two hearts made of white chocolate striped with dark chocolate. The cake is garnished with whipped cream, raspberries, and raspberry sauce. I actually used very basic equipment for this cake (cake pans, electric hand-mixer, frosting tips, and parchment paper) because the rest was packed away for a move.

2007
blue ribbon Board
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Baked Goods Sweepstakes
Date:8/19/2007

I found out, in 2006, that the Home Arts Dept. keeps track of all the points each entrant gets for entries for sweepstakes. This was the year I set out to win. The secret, told to me by a previous winner, is to enter vast numbers of minor variations of items and to bake everything in miniature (this avoids waste and makes it easier to enter more things).
blue ribbon
blueberries
Prize Awarded: 1st prize & Best of Show
Entry: Dried Blueberries
Date:8/5/2007

I decided to dry these using an oven - a big mistake. I had to leave the oven cracked open and running overnight. I guess winning best of show was worth it though.
blue ribbon Well, that's Just peachy
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Peach Jam
Date:8/5/2007

I was told that this jam managed to beat someone else's peach jam that hadn't been beaten in 30 years. Pretty good for a first try.
blue ribbon cherry pie
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Cherry Crumb Pie
Date:8/13/2007

As with all my other cakes/pies in the main part of the fair that year, this was a miniature pie - about 5 inches.
blue ribbon No photo available Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Cake Brownies
Date:8/13/2007

The stuff I entered that year was kind of all over the place (I think I had 96 entries). I guess I missed all my cake brownies when I was taking pictures.
blue ribbon No photo available Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Pistachio Cake Brownies
Date:8/13/2007

The 2007 fair was how I found out how well pistachios go with chocolate.
blue ribbon cheesy
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Cheesecake
Date:8/13/2007

This was perfectly neat and pretty when I entered it. Iguess they knocked some of the crumbs around.
blue ribbon Cheeeeeseyyy

Same as the one above, but with peach glace pie filling spread over the top.
blue ribbon Aw, nuts.
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Candied Nuts.
Date:8/13/2007

I was surprised that these kept well enough to win first prize. If I recall correctly, these were cashews and macadamias.
blue ribbon pie
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Dutch Apple Pie
Date:8/13/2007

More accurately, this was an apple crumb pie, but there was a special category for dutch apple pie so I entered it under that title.

Entry: Banana Bread
Date:8/13/2007

Nanneriffic.
blue ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Apple Coffee Cake
Date:8/13/2007

This was sort of like a sweet butter biscuit recipe with apples in the middle.
blue ribbon cuppy cakes
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Chocolate Strawberry Cupcakes
Date:8/13/2007

I stuck chunks of white chocolate into the tops to mark which flavor they were. Keeping entries organized was understandably challenging that year.
blue ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Citrus Cake
Date:8/13/2007

This cake, and its butter frosting, was made with orange and lemon extracts. I think the extracts helped make the frosting extra smooth and shiny.
red ribon jam
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Strawberry Peach Jam
Date:8/5/2007

This was my favorite of the jams I made.
red ribbon Saucy!
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Pineapple Sauce
Date:8/5/2007

The reason it looks foamy in this picture is that the photo was taken a few days after it was judged (opened). If I recall correctly, the sauce was made with pineapple puree and agave syrup.
red ribon apples
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Dried Apples
Date:8/5/2007

These were oven dried, like the blueberries, but they didn't take nearly as long.
red ribon bread
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Banana
Strawberry Bread

I don't really remember what this tasted like, but it must have been good.
red ribon cake
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Peach Coffee Cake

Date:8/13/2007

Same as the apple coffee cake, but with peaches. Actually, I baked them together in the same pan by putting different fruit on either side and cutting it in half after it was baked. I couldn't decide which flavor I liked better.
red ribon bread

Entry: Cinnamon Apple Raisin Bread

red ribon cake
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Chocolate Angel food Cake

Date:8/13/2007

Oddly enough, I liked the plain version better. Somehow, I just can't get used to the idea of chocolate angel food cake.
red ribon cake
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Pound Cake

Date:8/13/2007

Oh, how I do love pound cake. Especially when frozen.
red ribon pie
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Grape Pie

Date:8/13/2007

I made this pie for the "dieters' delight" category because grapes are sweet enough not to need any sugar. It was kind of tricky figuring out how to bake it without getting too much juice (slit them open and bake at low heat for a while before trying to brown the crust. For some reason, the judges seem to have removed the top layer of grapes from the pie. Since it wasn't sliced, that must have been how they judged it.
red ribon pie
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Strawberry Glace Pie

Date:8/13/2007

The recipe for this pie seems the same in every cookbook.
red ribon pie
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Peach Glace Pie

Date:8/13/2007

Exactly the same as the strawberry version, but with peach puree instead.
red ribon cupcakes Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Orange Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

Date:8/13/2007

What is the difference between an unfrosted cupcake and a muffin? I decided it was sugar content.
red ribon house
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Gingerbread House

Date:8/13/2007

This was entitled "Cabin in the Woods." The roof tiles are chocolate pastilles, the chimney is covered with jellybeans, the Christmas lights are gumdrops, the fence is chocolate, the door frame is jellybeans, and the wreath is a lifesaver. Someone opened the door behind me as I took the photo, thus the flash on the upper-right.
red ribon hat
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Decorated Hat

Date:8/14/2007

This was entitled "Homegrown Hat." It's made of a straw hat, green fabric (that took forever to sew together), fabric flowers, and plastic fruit (which I hot-glued in place).
red ribon cakes
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Low-Sugar Strawberry Shortcakes

Date:8/15/2007

I made these for a low-sugar contest. The cakes themselves were sweetened with watermelon juice and there was about a teaspoon of sugar in the whipped cream. I lost to a chocolate cake containing 2 cups of sugar, plus frosting. So unfair.
red ribon torte Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Chocolate-Hazelnut Cookie Torte

Date:8/16/2007

Giant wafers using ground up hazelnuts as flour, layered with chocolate whipped cream. The last wafer was cut into wedges, dipped in chocolate and decorated with plain whipped cream and chocolate dipped strawberries. It didn't turn out nearly as tall and pretty as the one in the BHG cookbook. It was beaten by a chocolate-chili pepper cake with immaculate presentation.
white ribbon Jam
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Blackberry Jam

Date:8/5/2007

This was pretty good jam, but it was just a bit too liquidy.

I don't really like the combination of vanilla and mint, but the judges did.
white ribbon Salsa!
Prize Awarded: 3rd & Special prize for presentation
Entry: Fruit Salsa
Date:8/19/2007

This was an entry for a salsa contest. I made fruit salsa and served it in a carved watermelon with home-made cinnamon pita chips and wedges of lime. It only won third place, but the judges gave me an extra blue ribbon for my presentation.

I prefer moister cornbread to dry and crumbly. Sorry about the cut off photo.
ribbon C-c-corrrrnnnn!!!!!

There was a very subtle flavor difference between this and the yellow cornbread. I liked them both about the same.

I think the spice was pumpkin pie spice.
ribbon bread

If I recall correctly, the three nuts were pistachios, macadamias, and cashews.
ribbon brownies
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Chocolate Fudge Brownies

Date:8/13/2007

I'm still not used to baking fudge brownies. I always overbake them because they seem perpetually raw.
ribbon hat
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Decorated Hat

Date:8/14/2007

This hat was titled "Springtime Millinery." The name wasn't particularly creative, but I think the design of the hat is relatively becoming - in a garish sort of way.
ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Raspberry Lemon Torte

Date:8/18/2007

This was made of three layers of sponge cake, lemon curd embedded with raspberries as filling, and a whipped cream / gelatin frosting. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to chill this torte properly before taking it to the contest so the frosting was too soft. Still tasted good though.

2006
BLue ribon Winter cake
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Decorated Cake
Date:8/12/2006

The title of this cake was "Winter Wonderland." It's a very plain cake decorated with a sheet of white fondant, fondant animals, and large sugar crystals. The igloo is also made of cake. I made the tree with layers of fondant stacked on a toothpick. The puddle is powdered sugar icing.
BLue ribon cookies
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Finikia and Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies
Date:8/16/2006

Finikia are like semolina shortbread cookies dipped in a light syrup. After they dried, I also half dipped them in white chocolate and topped them with pecan halves. The other cookies are discs of homemade marshmallow sandwiched with soft chocolate cookies.
BLue ribon cake
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Pistachio Cake with White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Date:8/12/2006

This cake was a big hit when I made it for my brother's birthday so I entered it in the fair the next year. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any pre-shelled nuts and had to shell hundreds of them by hand - yeesh.
BLue ribon Oh, fudge!
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Cacao Nib Fudge
Date:8/17/2006

This is chocolate fudge with cacao nibs. It turned out perfectly and I won with a perfect score.
BLue ribon pie
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Apple Meringue Pie
Date:8/18/2006

This is just like a lemon meringue pie, except I replaced the lemon juice in the filling with a freshly pureed granny smith apple (about 1/3 cup of puree). I tried store bought apple sauce and then juice, but they didn't work. I suspect the pectin wasn't intact anymore. I decorated the pie with a curl of apple peel and some oven-dried apple slices. This and someone else's entry both got perfect scores, but mine won because of my outside-the-box thinking.
red ribon cupcakes
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Decorated Cupcakes
Date:8/12/2006

These are decorated with colored fondant. I would have won first prize, but I didn't think the judges were going to taste them so I used the stiffest, driest recipe I could. Oh well.
red ribon cake
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Truffle Cake
Date:8/12/2006

This was a very thick, rich cake with a graham cracker crust. It's always been one of my favorite recipes.
red ribon pie
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Two Berry Ranier Cherry Pie
Date:8/20/2006

This was a strawberry, blueberry, and ranier cherry pie. I decorated it by dipping strawberries and cherries in a sugar syrup and spinning some of the sugar around the cherry stems. The crust wasn't quite as crisp as it should have been, however. Pie crust has always been a weakness of mine.
white ribbon pie
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Lemon Meringue Pie
Date:8/20/2006

If only I could figure out how to keep meringue from weeping.
white ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Orange Breakfast Cake
Date:8/12/2006

This was a light coffee cake sort of thing. The original recipe included poppy seeds, but I don't like those. The recipe might have been lemon flavored too, but I don't really remember.
white ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Chocolate Cheesecake
Date:8/17/2006

Originally, I just added the strawberry sauce and whipped cream to cover up the cracks in the top of the cheesecake, but it does look nice. This was the first cheesecake I had ever made. Actually, I don't like cheesecake at all - not even chocolate flavor. It's too salty to be a dessert, like chocolate yogurt.
white ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Super Chocolate Cake
Date:8/19/2006

Unfortunately, I only got one photo of this cake. Each of the four layers were different kinds of chocolate cake, the lightest at the top and the most dense at the bottom. It also had four different frostings/fillings. Tragically, however, I overheated the cream for the chocolate ganache that I used to coat the outside of the cake and it separated. The only tragedy worse than this was the year I made a cupcake croquembouche with burnt caramel. Aargh!
ribbon preserves
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Sweet Cherry Preserves
Date:8/5/2006

This was my first try at canning. Actually, this was cherry pie filling, but they didn't have a category for that.

2005
BLue ribon Caramels
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Caramels
Date:8/14/2005

The entry form originally said fudge, but three batches in a row didn't come out right so I made caramels instead. This was the first time I had ever made caramels.
red ribon Red berry glace pie Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Red Berry Glace` Pie
Date:8/21/2005

The filling was a reduced syrup, mostly of strawberries, with some red currents, raspberries, sugar, and corn starch. The crust was chocolate flavored. Also, I should mention that this photo is unrealistically dark. The berries and filling were actually bright red.
red ribon cookies 05
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Heart & Fruit Cookies
Date:8/17/2005

The heart cookies are rolled sugar cookies sandwiched with strawberry jam and dusted with powdered sugar. The fruit cookies are basically gingerbread mixed with candied fruit, coated with lemon glaze, and topped with candied orange peel.
white ribbon Pie
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Cranberry Apple Pie
Date:8/19/2005

The crust was a little thin, but the filling was great. I've found that, when mixing cranberries with apples in a pie, it's better to use orange juice rather than lemon.
white ribbon cupcakes
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Fluffy Cupcakes
Date:8/14/2005

Angel food cupcakes with orange royal frosting (which collapsed, as you can see).
white ribbon chocolates
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Fudge Truffles
Date:8/18/2005

These are (recipe-wise) very complex truffles. The core is a ball of fudge. Wrapped around that is chocolate marzipan. A piece of caramel is then molded to the bottom and finally the whole thing is coated in chocolate. The chocolate wasn't tempered so I dusted the truffles with cocoa powder and powdered sugar to cover up the streaks.
ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Opposites Cake
Date:8/20/2005

This cake was made up of alternating layers of angel food and devil's food cake with butter frosting. It turned out to be a delightful combination, but I think it looked better sliced up than it did whole. Also, I should have frosted the outside.

2004
BLue ribon Arrgh, me hearties!
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Pirates' Table
Date:8/16/2004

This is one of my favorite entries, if only for the humorous reactions of little old ladies upon learning that it was mine. I usually have a bit of trouble, aesthetically speaking, with that silly information tag that all entrants are required to place upon their settings. This time I was able to allay that difficulty by using one of the knives to pin it to the table. The use of red roses was my mom's idea. It looked even better once the roses began wilting.
red ribon

The beads of this necklace are made of citrine and, I think, brass. It looks a bit Grecian, don't you think?
red ribon cake 2
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Fudge Filled Cake
Date:8/18/2004

I was late for the fudge contest and I thought to myself "Well, fudge is basically just frosting anyway" so I used it as filling for this cake.
white ribbon minty
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Mint Roses
Date:8/15/2004

The petals are made of white chocolate with food coloring. The filling is powdered sugar icing with mint extract.
white ribbonPurple ribbon 3 berry pie
Prize Awarded: 3rd prize & Special Creativity Award
Entry: Three Berry Pie
Date:8/22/2004

This was a very plain, yet tasty, pie. It was merely composed of pie crust, strawberries (twice baked to avoid excess oozing) blackberries, and raspberries (baked 'till soft and brushed lightly with melted blackberry jam).
white ribbon No photo available Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Picnic
Date:8/17/2004

They had a "picnic basket" contest at the fair. I entered what was essentially a giant salad in a bowl. There were only three entries so winning third prize was nothing to write home about.
ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Crumb Cake
Date:8/15/2004

I was surprised that such a thin layer of batter could bake up so thick. This cake was how I found out that I really like crumb cake.
ribbon Sad cake
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Lemon Layer Cake
Date:8/15/2004

Apparently, something dreadful happened to the frosting after I entered it. Naked cake.
ribbonribbon pie
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention & Special Creativity Award
Entry: Apple Pie
Date:8/20/2004

This was an apple pie with the crust shaped like leaves with a flower in the center. Around the pie, I arranged apple slices, poured sugar syrup (that hardened into candy) on top, and placed a few raspberries. Tragically, the apples in the pie were underdone and playing with the crust too much made it come out kind of cardboardy.
ribbon crown

Entry: Poinsettia Crown
Date:7/31/2004

This was made of green craft wire and fabric flowers.
ribbon Croq
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Tower of Chocolate
Date:8/21/2004

This was a croquembouche made of chocolate cupcakes and decorated with spun sugar & dark chocolate. This is actually a photo of a practice version. I didn't get a good photo of the one I actually entered, which came to a perfect peak of cupcakes on top. Unfortunately, I burnt the sugar syrup for the actual entry, and the spun sugar melted during the hour of judging anyway.

BLue ribon trail mix
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Hilary's Mallow Mix
Date:8/11/2003

The ingredients for this trail mix were mini-marshmallows, dried cranberries, cashews, yogurt covered raisins, sugared dates, white chocolate chips, and semi-sweet chocolate chips.

I was trying for a best of show award, but they chose not to award one that year. Hmph.

BLue ribon pigs

Entry: Untitled
Date:8/?/2003

This was originally modeled off of a teddy bear. However, after running out of copper wire (And time), I had to make a silly looking head. It was Dad's suggestion.

when I'd finished, it looked so ridiculous that I knew it would win first prize. It now holds a place of honor on Dad's shelf.

This was my first try at making meringues. They were flat, but actually pretty good. I found the recipe for the other cookies on the internet. It said that it was a recipe for girl scout cookies. I modified the recipe to my own taste and used a cupcake tin to make them round. They were quite delightful.

Entry: Blackberry Pie
Date:8/17/2003

That year I had the goofy idea of making a pie filling out of nothing but blackberries and blackberry jam. As you can see, it didn't hold together very well once it was sliced. However, it did taste really good.
white ribbon cinn rolls
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Cinnamon Rolls
Date:8/11/2003

I overcooked these even more than the previous year, so they turned out a little tough. Also, I iced them when they were still warm, which caused them to look icky when they cooled and contracted overnight.
white ribbon bread
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Baguette
Date:8/10/2003

Since I entered this the day before the judging, it had almost twenty-four hours for the outside to become soft and leathery. Oh well. Sorry about the photo, but it's the only one I have.
ribbon cake
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Checker Cake
Date:8/16/2003

The batter for this cake was separated with a checker cake kit. Without the frosting, the layers look like white and chocolate rings.
ribbon hat
Prize Awarded: Honorable Mention
Entry: Easter Bonnet
Date:8/11/2003

The flowers on the hat are real. Unfortunately, since this hat was on display for about a week, I had to replace and water the flowers every two days. It looked a little different by the end of the week.

This fudge turned runny and grainy, but one of the viewers choice judges said it was the best fudge he'd ever tasted anyway. Go figure.

BLue ribon Trail mix
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Hilary's Mix
Date:8/10/2002

The more I looked around in the entry book, the more I noticed that almost anything could be entered in the County Fair. In the "Home Arts" section, I found trail mix as a possible entry. I figured "Well it's silly, but what the heck I've nothing to lose" and entered trail mix. As you can see, all that I put in it was raisins, sugared dates, unsalted cashews, semi-sweet and white chocolate chips, and dried cranberries. Mom suggested that I add mini-marshmallows, but I thought that would taste weird. As it turned out, the trail mix that was awarded best of show that year had mini-marshmallows in it.
BLue ribon Table setting
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Mystic's Table
Date:8/10/2002

This table setting, entitled "Mystic's Table," is one of my favorite efforts. The tablecloth is actually an unusual looking blanket that my eldest brother gave to me. The centerpiece is a light cover, into which I had put a couple of those Halloween glowing chemical sticks. It originally glowed green
BLue ribon Painting
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Painting 1
Date:7/31/2002

I actually didn't expect to get any prize for this painting. Firstly, because I hadn't painted since I was little; secondly, because I was using poster-paint; and thirdly, because I painted it in great haste the day before it was to be judged.
BLue ribon Ornament
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Xmas Ornament
Date:8/3/2002

This Christmas tree ornament was made of a Styrofoam ball, craft glue, glass seed-beads, and a bent paperclip. It took about a day to make. I didn't think that it would win anything, but (like the painting) it too got 1st prize. The picture shows it from each angle. Front (upper left), back (upper right), bottom (lower left), top (lower right).

They're a couple of days old in this picture. Can you tell? They probably would have gotten first prize if I hadn't overbaked them.
Red ribbon Necklace
Prize Awarded: 2nd
Entry: Speckled Band
Date:8/3/2002

This necklace was entitled "The Speckled Band." I had originally made it for Christmas. The scorecard from the judges said that they gave it 2nd prize because it looked "unbalanced." I guess they didn't know that I meant for it to look that way.

Entry: Strawberry Ice Cream
Date:8/18/2002

My brother was entering chocolate ice cream (which one first place for the second year in a row) in an ice cream contest so I and Dad did so as well. Dad got 3rd prize for his orange ice cream, but I liked it the best of the bunch. There were only four entrants in the contest that year.
white ribbon Cake
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Strawberry Cake
Date:8/11/2002

Because the only ingredients in the frosting were strawberry purée and confectioners' sugar, it became very runny after a couple of hours. It felt a little silly to stand around in the Home Arts building while trying to keep the frosting from oozing onto the table and floor. I don't think it affected the judging much though.
white ribbon Pie
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Blueberry Pie
Date:8/18/2002

As you probably noticed, some of the juice sloshed out of the pie on the way over to the contest; but I don't think that it made any difference because there were only two other contestants. One of them was my dad. It was a pretty simple pie. The filling merely consisted of blueberries coated with sugar and lemon juice. Of course it's just my opinion, but I don't think that blueberry pie filling should contain things like tapioca mix or gelatin, and I do prefer flour to cornstarch.
white ribbon Moon

Entry: Moon
Date:8/1/2002

This photograph is entitled "Moon." What else could I have called it.  I took this picture by holding a digital camera up to the viewfinder of a telescope. Pretty neat, huh?

white ribbon Mountain
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Mammoth Lakes
Date:8/1/2002

This photograph is entitled "Mammoth Lakes." The sky was actually much more blue than it appears to be in this picture, but the camera couldn't pick it up. I think this was lake George, but I don't actually remember.
white ribbon Mantle
Prize Awarded: 3rd
Entry: Grandmother's Mantle
Date:8/11/2002

This is my first, and only, mantle setting. The theme of this mantle setting was "Grandmother's house" because the other two themes in the entry book weren't as much to my liking. Everyone that saw it said the flowers looked like rainbow sherbet and also that I should enter flower arranging next time.
white ribbonribbon Pie
Prize Awarded: 3rd & Viewers Choice
Entry: Caramel Apple Pie
Date:8/16/2002

I used twice as much butter, sugar, and flour mixture as I did in the 2001 apple pie, and I only smeared a little bit on the top crust this time. The butter was still quite hot and runny when it was judged. I think I used some spices that year.

Entry: Bears In Space
Date:7/?/2002

This is a modified photo of the characters in my stop-motion movie, "Bears In Space." My brother, Eric, made this picture as a label for the video-CD of Bears in Space. As you may have noticed, two of these bears also starred in "Halloween Bears." I need to replace the music I used in the opening titles before I can post the video.

2001
BLue ribon Glass necklace
Prize Awarded: 1st
Entry: Touch of Glass
Date:8/3/2001

This necklace was entitled "Touch of Glass" because I didn't have the time to come up with a better title, and because it was the first glass bead necklace I had ever made. It would look much prettier in this picture if the flash on the camera hadn't whited-out the blue beads. this was also the first of my necklaces to have a clasp.

I liked the blondies from the previous year so much that I decided to make a blondie cake. Unfortunately, I made the frosting too dense.

Entry: Apple Pie

I forgot to bring my camera again that year, so I'll describe it to you. It had eight sliced apples in the bottom crust, strips of crust laid over the top, a melted butter and sugar mixture poured over the top crust, and was baked until the apples were soft and the top was totally blackened; which, oddly enough, everyone liked.

This was a cheesy stop-motion movie I entered in the fair. It was taped in 1998. In the video, an evil half bear (top) steals Liz (right) and George (left) comes to the rescue. The photo links to a crummy digitized copy I recently found. I and my brother re-edited the titles the way they were originally intended.

This cake was basically the same as the cake from the previous year, except I think I made the frosting really thick between each layer because the judges took off points from my previous cake for having too thin a layer of frosting.

Entry: Chocolate Chip Cake
Date:8/?/1996

This was just a three layer, 12-inch round chocolate chip cake with chocolate powdered sugar icing. As I recall, I decorated it with chocolate chips and, of all things, granulated sugar. The next year, oddly enough, I was told that my cake was accidentally shifted into the adult division and that (had it stayed in the kids' division) it probably would have earned higher than third place.
